Circul8 BMX Flatland review

On the weekend of February 25th 2011 a major shift in Flatland happened, a new event was born in Canada! This is good news for Canada and even more so for Quebec where flatland talent has always survived. Quebec in the old days had a great scene where contests & shows were a regular thing, our history goes back as far as 1985. So it has been at least 7 years since there has been any kind of Flatland contest here and now we have something we can call our own, a Quebec style Flatland comp with great expectations, Circul8 !

The ground work for a new series of Flatland contest was laid by the very talented Dub aka Jean-William Prevost. I had the chance to work with Dub during the last month of planning for this contest and let me say this guy worked hard to pull this off! With a very small budget and lots of hard work Dub and his crew were able to get this contest together and make it successful. Dub has a good vision and high expectations for this event, I can truly say that with time this event will grow to be a top notch event if Dub has his way and I dont doubt him one bit!

So I cant go into much detail for the future but I can say that if you missed this first event then you should definitely make a point of making it to the 2012 event! Next years Circul8 will be very exciting! Montreal is a great city, Flatland scene is big and we know how to party! So book March break for Montreal!

Alright so a little more about the comp, most of our Quebec riders were at the event. Here to support the cause was an old school rider, a pioneer of Flatland in Quebec and a true talent, Daniel Boyer came to show some old school skills! At 41 he can still rip! I rode with Dan back in the day and it was nice to catch up with him and see him pull some of his best tricks. Riders on attendance from Quebec, Steve Bergeron, Francois Cote, Simon Marsan, Jean-Francois Boulianne, Mike Lubensky, Stephan Clark, Miguel Lescarbeau,  Elais Odeh, Florian Schineider, Marco Morini and few others that came to watch.

Riders that travelled from Canada and USA in attendance were, Alex Poirier, Prasheel Gopal, Lachlan Cameron,Mark Kuhlman, Percy Marshall, Chris Mclean, Alexis La Grassa, Tyler Gillaird & Jon Dowker.

Registration and practice was opened on Friday night and the event began on Saturday morning, the atmosphere was great and Dub was highly motivated and so was I for that fact! Dub did a fantastic job on the MIC ! pumping up the riders and the crowd, he translated between french and english and kept things going smoothly. We also had a great DJ on site spinning the tunes all weekened, very cool DJ Mad Scholar along with some Redbull girls who kept the Redbull flowing!

So Saturday was pretty much the qualifications all day with alot of sessions. Dub planned a nice little touch to the event and invited a local rapper to come rap during Pro warmup’s, that started things off and Pro qualifications were great!  The day ended at 9pm and everyone went out to party.

Speeding up to sunday, this was the day for the finals with AM’s and Masters finishing up first. Some great runs by the top three of each of those classes! Really impressed by Tyler Gilliard, Mark Kuhlamn and Alexis La Grassa! For the Pro’s some great links and some powerful runs by Percy Marshall, Francois Cote, JF Boulianne, Lachlan Cameron and Steve Bergeron. We cant forget Stephan Clark and Daniel Boyer, some very good riding from both.

A nice touch to the event ended was the Best Trick contest, our very own Mike Lubensky grabbed that title! We closed up with awards on the podium and AM and Master winners all received some great prizes incuding a custom made medals. Pro’s all received medals and cash went to the top 5.

So in concluding, this event was very successful and all thanks to Dub and everyone who helped him! And we cannot thank the sponsors enough for supporting this event! See the list of all the sponsors on the Circul8 website. You can also see more pictures from Circul8 on the officail website.

thanks for reading! And see you at Circul8 2012!!
